It's finally happening! Pound-for-pound boxing great Canelo Alvarez is moving up the weight divisions to take on the world champion Dmitry Bivol.

The legendary Mexican fighter has declared his intentions to leave his super middleweight roots behind in pursuit of more fighting gold and has chosen to fight the Russian WBA titleholder.

Speaking to Matchroom Boxing, the promoters for the big fight, Alvarez said:

“I am very happy with this fight against Dmitry Bivol. It is another great challenge for me and my career - especially as I go up in weight and face an exceptional light heavyweight champion like Bivol.

“I am also very excited that we have this fight slated for Cinco De Mayo Weekend - 7th May - for all the fans to enjoy. We will be ready like we always are.”

Eddie Hearn, the promoter behind Matchroom, spoke about his "absolute honour" of announcing and hosting this fight.

“It is an absolute honour to announce a multi-fight promotional deal with the pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez,” he said, “Canelo transcends boxing and is the biggest star in the sport and we look forward to promoting some historic nights in 2022 live on DAZN PPV."
