Rangers defender Connor Goldson could depart the club in the summer as the ‘timing is probably right’, according to senior Gers reporter Chris Jack.

Goldson has been a mainstay in the Ibrox outfit’s backline since his arrival in July 2018, but he could be set to seek a new challenge following the conclusion of the current campaign.

What is the latest news involving Goldson?

Since completing his £3 million move from Brighton and Hove Albion three-and-a-half years ago, the 29-year-old has established himself as one of the top centre-backs in Scottish football.

Goldson has registered a highly respectable 18 goals and seven assists in 206 appearances for Rangers in that time, playing a pivotal part as they claimed their first top-flight title in 10 years last term.

However, the 6 foot 3 giant is now one of several senior players who have entered the final six months of their contracts.

The likes of Allan McGregor, Leon Balogun, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield are in similar situations, meaning it could prove to be a crucial summer for new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

According to the Scottish Sun, Championship duo West Brom and Nottingham Forest are vying for Goldson’s signature on a pre-contract agreement as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League.

But Rangers’ managing director Stewart Robertson revealed the club have not ‘resigned’ themselves to Goldson’s departure

“We are not resigned to that at all. Ross Wilson is having talks with all the players whose contracts expire in the summer,” he told Sky Sports (via The Scotsman).

What has Jack said about Goldson?

Although Goldson has become a dominant force in the SPFL, he may feel as though he has unfinished business in his homeland after making just three top-flight appearances.

And Jack believes the upcoming summer window could be the ideal opportunity to have ‘another crack’ at being a success in English football.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think the timing is probably right. If Connor fancies another crack at England, it’s going to be this summer.”

Would losing Goldson be a big blow?

Goldson was the linchpin of a backline that conceded just 13 times in 38 league games as Rangers went unbeaten on their way to the title last season.

The towering defender has struggled to hit the same heights this time around, yet his underlying numbers still highlight just how important his presence is.

As per WhoScored, Goldson has won 3.6 aerial duels while also making 3.3 clearances and 0.4 blocks, placing him in the top three amongst his teammates for each metric.

Hearts centre-back John Souttar is set to arrive on a free transfer in the summer, though, meaning the blow from Goldson’s potential exit has already been softened.
