The next time Everton have a major decision go to the Video Assistant Referee, there will be ‘even more pressure’ on the official in Stockley Park, according to journalist Dean Jones.

A hugely controversial call went against the Toffees over the weekend as they fell to a 1-0 defeat when taking on reigning champions Manchester City, leaving new manager Frank Lampard fuming.

What is the latest news involving Everton?

It seemed as though City just had to close out the final stages of an enthralling clash at Goodison Park after some shocking defending allowed Phil Foden to poke home unchallenged from close range in the 82nd minute.

However, just moments later, the ball struck Rodri’s arm inside his own 18-yard box in what appeared to be a clear penalty call, but referee Paul Tierney didn’t give the decision on the pitch and VAR official Chris Kavanagh ruled there was no reason to change that.

Coach Ashley Cole was given a yellow card by Tierney for his protests following the final whistle, while the home crowd also voiced their frustrations.

Lampard also blasted the officials, claiming Kavanagh was "incompetent at best" and a "professional who cannot do his job right" before claiming his three-year-old daughter would’ve made the right decision.

According to The Athletic, Everton’s chief executive officer Denise Barrett-Baxendale made a formal complaint to the Premier League over the officiating in recent matches, not just on Saturday.

The report then states that PGMOL general manager Mike Riley made calls to Bill Kenwright and Lampard to discuss the decision, admitting it was wrong and apologising for the mistake.

What has Jones said about Everton?

With the intense focus on Everton’s recent VAR call, Jones believes the extra scrutiny will certainly be felt by whichever officials take charges of their next few fixtures.

He told GiveMeSport: “The next time they have a VAR call, there's no way that the person in that booth has not got this on their mind when they're making the decision. So, there's going to be even more pressure on the next one.”

Can Everton avoid relegation?

Everton are currently sitting just one point and one place above the relegation zone after losing three of Lampard’s opening four Premier League games at the helm.

Tough fixtures against European hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves are around the corner, but a crucial couple of encounters soon follow.

The Merseysiders host relegation rivals Newcastle United on 17 March before travelling to Vicarage Road to take on Watford in two games which could go a long way to deciding their future come May.
