Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish grabbed his first ever FA Cup goal on Tuesday night, thanks to a Phil Foden assist that had definite Lionel Messi vibes to it.

Peterborough United, currently bottom of the Championship table, battled hard for an hour against the Premier League leaders in their fifth road tie at the Western Homes Stadium.

However, their brave resistance was finally broken when Riyad Mahrez found the net with City's first shot on target of the evening.

Grealish put the tie beyond all reasonable doubt seven minutes later as he latched on to a perfectly-floated ball played by Foden from just inside his own half to double his team's advantage.

The 2-0 scoreline might have been harsh on Peterborough given their immense efforts on the night, but Foden's pass to his City and England colleague was simply sublime.

In his post-match interview with ITV Sport, Grealish revealed that himself and Foden had been watching a compilation of Messi's greatest long-range passes while travelling down to Cambridgeshire. Just a few hours later, it seems that Foden decided to have a go at landing one of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's legendary raking balls.

"You know what's funny?" Grealish said. "Before the game, we were on the coach on the way here and I sit next to Phil.

"I was scrolling through Twitter and a video of Messi’s passing came up. Me and Phil were just watching it. Just like Messi, wasn't it, his pass?"

The sort of assist that Messi himself would likely be proud to have in his collection, Grealish wasn't wrong here.

So impressed was the former Aston Villa man with the compilation of Messi highlights he and Foden watched before the cup tie that he 'liked' it via his official account on the social media platform.

The package that inspired Foden's outstanding pass is 10 minutes of Messi at his brilliant best - and you can enjoy it below.
