It was announced yesterday that Pat McAfee will be wrestling in a match over WrestleMania weekend in Dallas next month. The SmackDown commentator was offered the match by Vince McMahon during the WWE Chairman’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show. No details have emerged on what night McAfee will be in action nor who he’ll be facing on the grandest stage of them all.GiveMeSport looks at five possible candidates to face MacAfee at WrestleMania.Vince McMahon
The industry was awash with rumours last week, with reports that Vince McMahon is about to step back into a wrestling ring for a match at WrestleMania. McMahon hasn’t competed in an actual match for over ten years and at 76-years-old it’s questionable what sort of performance he could put on, despite being in incredible shape for man of his age. His appearance on the Pat McAfee Show led fans to believe it could be to set-up an angle with the former NFL star that would lead to a meeting at WrestleMania. But even though he granted McAfee the match, there were no real signs it could be against himself or any tension to build the possibility of a clash on. There’s still time to create that story but given their rapport during this past week’s interview it looks unlikely at this stage.

Austin Theory

With Vince McMahon handing the match to Pat McAfee, could his opponent be someone McMahon has been similarly handing out opportunities to in Austin Theory. Theory has been sharing the screen with the WWE Chairman since Survivor Series, and it would be a logical next step in their relationship for Vince to grant the former NXT star a WrestleMania moment - and one ‘in story’ he believes he could win, against McAfee. With the amount of eyes McAfee’s presence brings and the stock they seem to have in Austin Theory, this one could be a win-win all around.

Corey Graves

As soon as the announcement was made on The Pat McAfee show last night about Pat’s WrestleMania outing, Graves took to Twitter to claim ‘I’ll happily beat Pat McAfee’s ass', and it’s a story that could work. With both sharing the same role on different brands, there is angle that could be explored that could see the two snipe at each other from the announce table and lead to a battle in the ring. Especially as we’ve recently learned that Graves is now cleared to compete in WWE again. The only concern is, would a match between McAfee and Graves be a big enough draw to put on a WrestleMania card.

Cody Rhodes

Cody’s WWE return seems to be hanging in the balance with reports that talks have 'fizzled out' between the two parties, but there’s no reason to believe the story couldn’t take another twist and see Rhodes be the opponent for McAfee in Dallas. Especially when you consider Pat’s comments on first hearing rumours of Cody’s return, where he dismissed the news by saying ‘Who cares?’. Yes, those remarks were very much tongue-in-cheek, but it could be the perfect jumping off point for a WrestleMania story and an intriguing way for Rhodes to finally seal his return.

Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins WWE

An outside bet maybe, but the road to WrestleMania isn’t particularly clear for one of WWE’s biggest talents right now. Rollins’ tag team title angle looks set to end on Raw next week and with his partner Kevin Owens looking forward to a reported WrestleMania date with Stone Cold Steve Austin, it leaves The Visionary without a viable opponent in Dallas - so why not McAfee? It’s totally plausible for the arrogance of Seth’s character to question why Vince McMahon would give a non-WWE Superstar a match at WrestleMania match and not him. Creating a problem with the SmackDown announcer that could see them settle it on the biggest stage of all. Their dynamic alone would be worth watching and screams WrestleMania match. Not to mention the guarantee that Rollins would make McAfee look like a star in the bout, too.
