Crystal Palace: Update reveals key position Eagles 'could look to strengthen'

Crystal Palace are not interested in welcoming Real Madrid ace Dani Ceballos to Selhurst Park but are keen on strengthening their defensive midfield options, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

The Eagles endured a quiet January transfer window until Jean-Philippe Mateta made his loan move permanent for £9million and Derby County teenager Luke Plange joined on deadline day, but manager Patrick Vieira could look to add further reinforcements in the summer.

What’s the latest news involving Ceballos?

According to Spanish sources, Ceballos has worked his way onto Vieira’s radar ahead of potentially making a move at the end of the season.

The report suggests Palace are willing to open the bidding at close to £15million and, if unsuccessful, would return with a revised offer Real Madrid president Florentino Perez may find ‘irresistible’.

Ceballos headed back to the Bernabeu last summer, following a loan spell with the Eagles’ London rivals Arsenal.

Although Ceballos failed to make a single appearance upon heading back to the Spanish capital until the early stages of 2022 due to an ankle injury, he has gone on to enjoy more game-time in recent weeks.

The 25-year-old midfielder also registered his first goal contribution of the campaign when he grabbed an assist in Real Madrid’s 2-1 extra-time win over Elche in the Copa del Rey in January.

What has Tom Barclay said about Ceballos?

Contrary to reports, Barclay does not believe Palace are interested in welcoming Ceballos back to the Premier League.

However, the journalist understands the Eagles could look to strengthen their options in defensive midfield when the transfer window reopens.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m told there’s nothing at the moment at least. He’s not a name I’ve heard of.

“I think holding midfield could be a place that they look to strengthen in the summer, but he’s not one that I’m aware of.”

Would Ceballos be a good signing for Palace?

Palace are already having to prepare for life without Conor Gallagher, who is currently on a season-long loan from Chelsea and unlikely to remain at Selhurst Park on a permanent basis.

Ceballos already boasts plenty of Premier League experience, having appeared in the competition 49 times during his time at Arsenal.

The 11-cap Spain international has shown he can be a threat in the final third of the pitch by registering 14 goals and 17 assists over the course of his senior club career, so he would add another attacking dimension to Palace’s options in the middle of the park.

Ceballos would also bring a winning mentality to south London after winning some of football’s biggest prizes, including the Champions League, Club World Cup and FA Cup.
