During a 14-year career in Europe's major leagues, former Real Madrid, Napoli and Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain was no stranger to success.

Having won a raft of top honours, including La Liga and Serie A titles on three occasions each, the veteran Argentine frontman made the switch to MLS outfit Inter Miami CF in September 2020.

The Florida-based franchise, owned by former England captain David Beckham, was no doubt hoping that their dressing room would benefit significantly from the presence of such an experienced top-level player.

With 13 goals in 40 appearances, Higuain has hardly set the world on fire since arriving stateside - and it doesn't appear that his attitude is doing much to impress those around him, either.

Higuain took the field last weekend as Miami were held to a goalless draw by Chicago Fire in their opening match of the season.

A few days after the match, Fire striker Fabian Herbers was jokingly on his Zee Soccer Podcast whether he had tried to swap shirts with the ex-Real Madrid star.

The 28-year-old German-born Herbers left his co-host in absolutely no doubt as to how he felt about Higuain, launching a stunning verbal assault on his opponent.

During his time at the Bernabeu, Higuain played alongside the likes of Raul, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo. Unsurprisingly, the current Inter Miami roster doesn't quite boast that level of quality.

According to Herbers, however, Higuain seemingly expected his colleagues to operate at that sort of standard - and labelled the 2015/16 Serie A top scorer as 'pathetic', calling his attitude 'destructive'.

"This guy is so pathetic. Obviously, he's a presence on the field and every time a teammate of his makes a wrong pass or something or doesn't pass the ball exactly to him, he's just standing there looking in a negative mood," Herbers stated, going in hard on Higuain for his apparent refusal to be a team player.

"His body language is just terrible. I wouldn't want to be a teammate of his. I'm over it. F*** that guy. I want nothing, no part of it.

"In the first game already, he's so negative, so destructive, so negative towards your own teammates who you're supposed to try to help."

Herbers also suggested that Higuain could prove a toxic presence in the Miami dressing room if this sort of conduct carries on long-term.

"You're supposed to lift them up, supposed to make them better as a leader, as a Designated Player, and I think it's going to be a long season for Miami and Higuain as well if that continues."

"Every time there's a missed pass he's just rolling his eyes and absolutely shockingly negative."

All in all, it's a pretty damning assessment of Higuain's character.

We're guessing he didn't adopt the same body language at Real Madrid if Ronaldo misplaced a pass!

Herbers' pointed criticism has drawn plenty of attention since the comments emerged. The pair are next scheduled to be on the same pitch when Inter Miami travel to Chicago in September - and Higuain might well have something to say on the matter when the duo next cross paths.
