West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will not leave The Hawthorns for Manchester United, claims former Baggies midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The 28-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has recently been linked with a return to Old Trafford.

What is the latest news involving Johnstone?

According to 90min, United are considering making a move for Johnstone as they prepare to let current No.2 Dean Henderson leave the club.

Henderson has barely played for the Red Devils this season because of the form of David de Gea, failing to make a single start in the Premier League.

It means the English shot-stopper is likely to depart Old Trafford before the beginning of next season in a development that would leave Ralf Rangnick's successor needing a new No.2.

And it seems that Johnstone, a product of United's academy like Henderson, is the man the Manchester club have identified.

What has Palmer said about Johnstone to United?

Palmer, however, does not think Johnstone would leave West Brom for United's bench, especially during a World Cup year.

When asked by GIVEMESPORT if he could see that transfer happening, the ex-West Brom player first provided an unequivocally clear one-word response: "No. In a simple word, no."

Palmer then elaborated: "It makes no sense that Sam goes there to go and sit on the bench. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever. It's a World Cup year as well, so he needs to be playing."

Should Johnstone join United?

Unless there is a drastic turnaround, it is highly unlikely that West Brom will win promotion back to the Premier League, with Steve Bruce's men now in the bottom half of the Championship table.

Considering that, Johnstone will probably want to leave the Baggies at the end of the season. However, as Palmer said, a move to United does not make any sense.

The £7.2m-rated England international would likely find himself in the same situation as Henderson, as De Gea is the club's undisputed No.1.

Ultimately, Johnstone would be better off considering offers from the likes of West Ham and Southampton, who are also thought to be interested in the 6 ft 4 keeper, or just staying at West Brom.

If he wants to make Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad, he needs to play, which is just not going to happen at Old Trafford. And the ex-United player only has to look at Henderson to know that as his compatriot now pushes for a move away from Old Trafford.
