West Bromwich Albion will be frustrated in their attempts to welcome Newcastle United ace Sean Longstaff to the Hawthorns because they will not be able to meet the midfielder's financial demands, according to Carlton Palmer.

The Baggies secured their first win of Steve Bruce's reign by overcoming Hull City 2-0 at the weekend and the manager is already looking at potential signings ahead of the summer transfer window opening for business.

What's the latest news involving Longstaff?

According to Football League World, West Brom are keen on Longstaff ahead of looking to bolster their squad at the end of the season.

The report suggests the central midfielder has worked his way onto the Championship club's radar following Bruce's appointment as Albion's chief last month.

Longstaff's current Newcastle contract - worth £23,000-per-week - is set to expire at the end of June, leading to question marks over where his long-term future lies.

As it stands, the 24-year-old will leave St James' Park for free when his deal runs out and, having entered the final six months of his agreement at the turn of the year, Longstaff could already sign a pre-contract agreement with overseas suitors.

But Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is keen to see Longstaff sign a deal which is already on the table and has claimed he still has a 'long-term future' on Tyneside.

What has Carlton Palmer said about Longstaff?

Palmer believes Longstaff's precarious contract situation does not play into West Brom's hands as the Newcastle academy product will be seeking a sizeable signing-on fee and contract.

The former Albion midfielder reckons Bruce may be forced into looking elsewhere for summer reinforcements.

Palmer exclusively told GIVEMESPORT: "If he is available on a free, I would say that puts West Brom out of the hunt for him, to be honest with you.

"We know the way that West Brom work on a budget and on a shoestring. Being available on a free, he's going to want a package of up to £7million to go anywhere.

"I would assume that takes West Brom out of the hunt for him."

Why is Longstaff on Bruce's radar?

Bruce knows Longstaff well having worked with the central midfielder prior to parting company with Newcastle by mutual consent last October.

Longstaff has not made more appearances under any manager than Bruce, having been selected 65 times by the 61-year-old.

Howe's appointment as Bruce's successor has not paid off for Longstaff, with the £11.7million-rated man only featuring six times under the former Bournemouth chief.
