Newcastle and Arsenal are expected to lead the running to sign Marcus Rashford if he pushes to leave Manchester United.

It is understood he has become concerned about how he fits into the club’s plans, particularly after being overlooked in the Manchester derby, and will assess the situation over the summer.

Any decision will be swayed by who comes in as the next boss and with Ralf Rangnick preferring Erik Ten Hag at this stage, there may be further concern about how things pan out.

If Rangnick has not been convinced by Rashford, it could be that the man selected by Rangnick to become the new manager begins with a similar stance.

It is believed there are figures at Arsenal who have had Rashford in mind for a while, if a situation like this ever occurred. Similarly, Newcastle United are very keen to recruit England internationals to boost their profile and quality next season and will be interested to speak to him if the idea of a move opens up.

Rashford is trying to remain focused for the moment and is desperate to remain part of the United side. He will get opportunities before the end of the season and will then have to consider what happens next, with the prospect of a move abroad also likely to open up.

How has Marcus Rashford performed this season?

It's been a difficult campaign for Rashford - who Transfermarkt value at £76.5m - especially in comparison to last term.

The England international finished the 2020/21 season with 20 Premier League goal involvements from 37 outings, as well as six goals in as many Champions League appearances.

This campaign, Rashford has only found the net four times in the top flight, and his confidence appeared to be at a low when he lacked both energy and conviction in failing to latch onto a possible rebound during a 1-0 FA Cup win over Aston Villa in January.

Rangnick has used Rashford sparingly since that incident, having only started two of United's eight subsequent Premier League games. He was left on the bench entirely for the 4-2 win over Leeds, and was only brought on in Sunday's Manchester derby with 26 minutes left to play.

Anthony Elanga, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho have started in Rashford's preferred left-wing role instead, and he's yet to score since netting against Brentford and then West Ham in January.

Prior to that, Rashford hadn't found the net in any competition since October when he scored in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham.
