West Ham definitely need to sign a striker this summer, says journalist Paul Brown.

Up front is one area the east London club are currently light in after failing to bring in a new centre-forward in January.

Did West Ham target any strikers in the last transfer window?

While they were not able to sign one in the end, West Ham and manager David Moyes did at least attempt to bring in a No.9 in January.

According to Sky Sports, the Hammers failed with a late move for Atalanta's Duvan Zapata on deadline day, with the 30-year-old having also been a target for Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

West Ham's move for Zapata came after their failure to acquire Benfica star Darwin Nunez earlier, showing that they were undoubtedly keen on bolstering their frontline.

With neither player arriving, though, Moyes will have to make do with what he has got and hope it is enough to take his side into the Champions League.

What has Brown said about West Ham?

Brown thinks West Ham need another striker, which is in line with Moyes' view, although the Hammers boss is reluctant to bring someone in who is not going to offer genuine competition to Michail Antonio.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Daily Star journalist said: "They definitely need a centre-forward. He said himself that it's the position they need to strengthen in."

Will West Ham sign a new No.9 this summer?

It is surely only a matter of time before David Gold, David Sullivan and Daniel Kretinsky invest in a new forward.

Antonio is the club's only recognised No.9 and has had some struggles this season. The 31-year-old has scored eight league goals so far but has not registered in any of his last eight top-flight fixtures.

At times, Jarrod Bowen has filled in for Antonio in that centre-forward position, but Moyes' preference will be for the Englishman to remain on the right flank, where he can cut in from with his dangerous left foot.

He has over 15 goal contributions in the Premier League this term, with practically all of them coming in his appearances as a wide player.

Ultimately, West Ham's options up front have been limited since they sold Sebastien Haller to Ajax over a year ago, and that is something that must be addressed if they are to continue to progress under Moyes. Therefore, do not be surprised if a new marksman finally arrives in the summer.
