Crystal Palace: Patrick Vieira 'not convinced' over multiple Eagles stars

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is ‘just not convinced’ over several members of his first-team squad at this moment in time, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The French tactician has made a solid start to life in south London after succeeding Roy Hodgson last summer, although some players will perhaps be disappointed with their recent game time.

What is the latest news involving Crystal Palace?

Vieira oversaw a significant overhaul of the playing staff at Palace during his first few months at the helm, with several experienced campaigners being replaced by young, exciting talents.

The likes of Andros Townsend, Gary Cahill and Scott Dann were allowed to leave on free transfers after several years of solid performances under the pragmatic Hodgson.

However, Vieira’s arrival marked a new chapter in the capital club’s history and saw rising stars such as Michael Olise, Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher replace them.

Palace new-look side got off to a slow start under the 45-year-old’s stewardship, though, claiming just one victory from their opening nine Premier League games as they took time to gel.

But then back-to-back victories over reigning champions Manchester City and high-flying Wolves put Palace on course for a comfortable campaign.

Nevertheless, certain players will be underwhelmed with their lack of opportunities of late and will perhaps be concerned that Vieira has lost faith in their ability.

What has Jones said about Crystal Palace?

Summer signing Odsonne Edouard has only played one minute out of Palace’s last four league games, while Christian Benteke has been awarded just 27 minutes of action in their previous six encounters.

Fellow forward Jordan Ayew has also been out-of-favour and has been left on the bench against both Burnley and Wolves in recent weeks, and Jones believes Vieira is doubtful over their ability to ‘do the job that he wants from them’.

He told GiveMeSport: “For whatever reason, there are a few people in that squad right now that he’s just not convinced can do the job that he wants from them, so he’s not picking them.”

Is Edouard being harshly treated?

While the phasing out of ageing attackers Benteke and Ayew was perhaps expected and even welcomed by Palace supporters, Edouard’s lack of game time will surely have come as a surprise.

What shirt number does Christian Benteke wear for Crystal Palace?

The former France Under-21 international arrived from Celtic back in August in a deal that could rise to £18.5 million, and his underlying numbers indicate he’s made a healthy, if unspectacular, contribution to his new side.

As per WhoScored, Edouard has bagged six goals and provided three assists while averaging 1.6 shots per game, 0.8 key passes and one dribble per league game, placing him in the top five for each metric when compared to his teammates.
