Carragher's cheeky dig at Schmeichel after City 4-1 United

Schmeichel played for both Manchester clubs during his illustrious career but is firmly a red rather than a blue.

The legendary former Denmark goalkeeper was at the Etihad and admits it was tough to witness as a Man Utd fan.

CBS Sports host Kate Abdo opened Tuesday’s Champions League show by saying to Schmeichel: “Peter, you’re still standing after Sunday, mate?”

Schmeichel laughed and replied: “Welcome back to the studio, hey!

“It's been a very very mixed bag.

“As I watched my son (Kasper) play against Leeds on Saturday and they won 1-0 - two consecutive clean sheets and six points that was brilliant.

“Then on Sunday seeing Manchester United... I wouldn't say play Man City but be outplayed by Man City.

“Basically we've been exposed to the level that we're at…”

It was at this point that Schmeichel was interrupted by Jamie Carragher, who couldn’t resist mentioning the fact that his CBS Sports colleague said Man Utd could win the Champions League just last month.

The Liverpool hero said: “So you still think they can win the Champions League?”

Schmeichel immediately responded: “That was in the Premier League, let's take it one tournament at a time.”

Peter Schmeichel's Man Utd Champions League prediction

And while we’re here, let’s take another look at Schmeichel’s Man Utd prediction just three weeks earlier.

When asked by Micah Richards if he genuinely believed United could win the Champions League this season, Schmeichel said: “Yes!”

He added: “What kind of question is that?”

Carragher replied: “What kind of answer is that?!”

United held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano last month and face Diego Simeone’s side in the Round of 16 second leg at Old Trafford on March 15.
