Liverpool have been named as the most popular football club in the United Kingdom.

The 19-time champions of England not only attract tens of thousands of passionate fans to all four corners of Anfield every week, but the club is also a worldwide beacon for Kopites around the globe.

Such is the history, passion and belief that pumps through the veins of the Reds that any and everybody wants to stand in the Kop at least once in their life and have their spine tingled by 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

Sure, fans of rival clubs like Everton and Manchester United aren't exactly enamoured, but the heavy-metal football of the Jurgen Klopp era has even seen Liverpool win over a lot of neutrals in recent years.

As such, maybe it makes sense that Liverpool are the most beloved football club in the UK, after all? Ok, ok, we can hear the protestations from a mile away, so let's do some more digging into the situation.

The data comes from none other than YouGov, which uses 'popularity' and 'fame' metrics to build ratings that claim to be "the biggest and boldest attempt ever made to quantify what Britain thinks."

YouGov study on football clubs

Purportedly based upon millions of responses that grow on a daily basis, the YouGov Ratings are plugged into everything from food, television and of course: "The Most Popular Football Clubs."

And according to their Q4 data from 2021, Liverpool stand head and shoulders above the rest as the UK's most popular football club with 38% of people holding a positive opinion of them.

Now, that's all well and good, but how does the rest of the list take shape? Besides, you don't have to be a British club to be popular with UK citizens, so plenty of European sides are breathing down Liverpool's neck.

Liverpool reign supreme

Very interesting. Very, very, very interesting.

Let's face it, certain sections of the list are absolutely wild with League One Accrington Stanley placing above Celtic and Rangers, while newly-promoted Brentford get the better of Tottenham and Chelsea.

However, presumably the secret to success here is as much about not being dislikable as it is attracting people who like you with Leicester and Palace presumably just being less divisive than, say, Arsenal and City

And that could well be why Barcelona and Real are remarkably the second and third-most loved clubs in the country despite playing hundreds upon hundreds of miles away.

So, who knows, perhaps it's an even bigger compliment to Liverpool for still ranking as the most popular club in the land despite all the carnage behind them where their biggest rivals are strewn all over the place.

The people, ladies and gentlemen, have spoken.
