Tottenham: Conte tipped to 'target' surprise upgrade

Tottenham could look to bring in a left wing-back in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Antonio Conte currently has Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon to call upon to cover this position, but he may be looking for an upgrade in the coming months.

What’s been happening with Sessegnon and Reguilon recently?

The first part of Sessegnon’s campaign was severely disrupted by injuries but he has started to come into his own lately.

The 21-year-old registered his first assist of the season against Leeds last month when he set up Matt Doherty, and he got Spurs off to a flying start on Monday when his dangerous cross at home to Everton was diverted into his own net by Michael Keane.

Unfortunately, he had to be substituted at half time in that game due to a muscular problem, and he has now been ruled out until after this month’s international break.

Meanwhile, due to Sessegnon’s upturn in form, Reguilon has had to settle for a place on the bench more regularly over the past few weeks.

However, he replaced the English full-back at the break against the Toffees, and scored within a minute of coming on to remind Conte of his qualities.

What has O’Rourke said about Tottenham’s situation at left wing-back?

Despite Sessegnon and Reguilon impressing recently as they battle to establish themselves in the team, O’Rourke thinks Conte may still be keen to add another left-sided player to his squad in the summer, particularly if Real Madrid show an interest in activating Reguilon’s buy-back clause.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I still think a left wing-back could be a target as well for Conte, especially if Real Madrid decide to activate their buy-back clause on Sergio Reguilon. It would leave them quite short.”

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

Would it be a surprise if Conte brought in a new left wing-back at the end of the season?

Arguably it would be, given that Spurs have various other positions that need strengthening.

On the opposite flank, the right wing-back role has been a problem for the side all season, and it has been reported that Tottenham are already happy to listen to offers for Emerson Royal. Therefore, bringing in someone to take over from him ought to be a priority.

The middle of the park has also become a concern, especially after Harry Winks and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struggled so badly against Middlesbrough when Conte’s men were dumped out of the FA Cup. Spurs will surely want to sign another central midfielder over the summer.

Furthermore, adding a central defender, and an attacker to ease the workload slightly on Harry Kane could also be important for the team’s development.

Between them, Sessegnon and Reguilon have done very little wrong over the past month, and they may feel a little hard done by if Conte does decide to target a left wing-back ahead of next season.
