Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are desperate to play for Newcastle again this season, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The £34.2m-rated duo are both out injured and aren't guaranteed to play again before the campaign finishes.

What's the latest news involving Trippier and Wilson?

When Trippier fractured his metatarsal against Aston Villa last month, Newcastle's hopes of staying in the Premier League appeared to suffer a massive blow.

But instead of slipping further into danger, Eddie Howe's side have remained unbeaten, collecting 10 points from a possible 12 available which has seen them move 10 points clear of the bottom-three.

In fact, the Toon Army haven't actually lost in the top-flight since Callum Wilson suffered a muscle problem at the end of December.

His replacement, Chris Wood, has stepped up, and finally got his first goal in a Magpies shirt to start the turnaround against Southampton on Thursday.

Despite Newcastle being in sight of securing another campaign of Premier League football, Downie reckons that both Trippier and Wilson are eager to pull on the black and white shirt once again this season.

What did Downie say about Trippier and Wilson?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "I know for a fact the two players will be desperate to be involved between now and the end of the season."

When are Trippier and Wilson expected to return?

Following Trippier's successful surgery last month, Howe said that he was hopeful of the right-back returning before the end of the season.

He said: "We aim to have him back before the end of the season but it's a significant injury which is a big blow for us."

But injury specialist Ben Dinnery reckons that the former Tottenham man might be targeting a return to action ahead of 2022-2023, with similar injuries of this type taking around 80-85 days to recover from.

85 days from the injury is the middle of May, and with Newcastle extremely likely to already be safe by then, it's unlikely Howe would risk him with little to play for.

Meanwhile, he was unable to give an exact return date for when Wilson might be back in action, although he spoke positively about the striker's situation.

"He's very happy, he knows he's in a good place, he's improving," Howe said. "What I would love to see is him come back and be like a new signing for us for our final few games."
