Lionel Messi's time at Paris Saint-Germain really hasn't gone according to plan.

While we've seen glimpses of his mercurial genius, the Argentinian superstar has looked a shadow of his former Barcelona self.

The day the news broke that Messi had played his last game for Barcelona was a seismic one in the football world and PSG were quick to swoop in and offer him a new home.

Sadly, for all parties, what was thought to be the spark that might finally light the Parisian inferno, has proven to be a bit of a damp squib.

And that stuttering PSG flame was dealt another fatal blow on Wednesday night as they, once again, crashed out of Europe at the first sign of pressure.

Having edged the first leg of their Round of 16 tie with Real Madrid and with Kylian Mbappe giving them the lead in the second, the French side looked to be cruising before an all too familiar second-half capitulation saw them ship three goals in a matter of minutes.

For Messi, it was yet another crushing defeat in Europe's premier competition - just the latest in a long line of disappointments for the Argentinian in the Champions League.

However, it hasn't always been this way for Messi on the continent. In fact, there was a time when he conquered Europe at will.

Those heady days as the Barcelona spearhead might be behind him now, but that doesn't mean we can't reminisce.

In fact, you can be sure Messi does a lot of looking back on what must've been some of the happiest days of his life - well, if footage of his celebrations following Barca's treble are anything to go by.

In the incredible footage, Messi is seen in quite a state as he and his teammates partied late into the night following one of the greatest achievements in football history.

It's clear that Messi has had a bit to drink, but who would begrudge the man one almighty party after all that had been achieved that season?

Unreal - those truly were the good days.

Sadly, there is a very real chance that we may never see Messi celebrating like this again.

There is, of course, still a World Cup to look forward to this year and who knows what might become of his PSG career.

For now, however, after the heartache of losing to Madrid, it's just very sad to see they turn Messi's career has taken.
