Southampton 'looking at' new signing in key role, 6'3 star set to leave

Southampton are ‘still looking’ for a striker ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The Saints could be short of options in the final third next season, with veteran forward Shane Long set to become a free agent and loan star Armando Broja expected to return to parent club Chelsea.

What is the latest news involving Southampton?

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s charges lost their leading marksman last summer when Danny Ings completed his £25 million move to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

In his place, Southampton brought in Adam Armstrong from Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers via a £15m deal after he registered 29 goals and five assists in 43 appearances across all competitions in 2020/21.

However, the diminutive ace has been unable to replicate that sort of form in the top-flight, scoring just two goals and laying on only three assists in 24 outings for his new side.

But luckily for the south coast club, Broja has stepped up to the mark, racking up 10 goal contributions in his 30 appearances throughout the current campaign.

The Albania international’s impressive form, combined with the ongoing situation regarding Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich, means a permanent switch to St. Mary’s is looking unlikely, though.

Therefore, Southampton have been linked with a handful of marksmen in recent weeks as the club’s hierarchy plan for life after the 6 foot 3 Broja.

What has Barclay said about Broja?

Southampton are currently sitting pretty in 10th position in the Premier League standings, but their tally of 36 goals scored is the second-lowest total in the top-half of the table.

And Barclay has revealed that Hasenhuttl is already searching for another goalscorer, with Broja’s exit looking ‘increasingly more likely’.

He told GiveMeSport: “They are still looking at a striker, particularly if Broja goes, which is increasingly more likely.”

Who could Southampton sign?

During the January transfer window, Southampton were linked with Hull City hitman Keane Lewis-Potter, who has contributed nine goals and laid on a further four assists for the Tigers this season.

Meanwhile, Italian outlet Calcio Mercato claimed that Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi was also on their radar after making a blistering start to life in the Scottish Premiership.

And The Sun claimed back in November that Southampton could return to Blackburn in order to secure the services of Armstrong’s former strike partner Ben Brereton Diaz.
