As a game typically played predominantly in autumn and winter, it is inevitable that some football matches are contested in weather that is less than ideal. However, reigning MLS MVP Carles Gil couldn't hide his disgust at the conditions his New England Revolution side were forced to play in during their home game with Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Spaniard - who made 34 appearances for Aston Villa between 2014 and 2017 - went on a furious rant over having to play in heavy snow at Gillette Stadium.

To be fair, Gil's mood probably wasn't helped by having just watched his team surrender a two-goal lead in the final 12 minutes of the match to fall to a 3-2 defeat - and he held nothing back as he raged about conditions in his post-match interview.

"It's impossible to play football today," the Revolution skipper insisted passionately when quizzed by local media about his side's capitulation.

“I cannot talk with my teammates, I cannot run, I cannot do anything. It's impossible, this is not football. Stop the f****** game. We play tomorrow or any other day, I don't care. This is not football, it's impossible. Try to make long balls, the wind, it's impossible. I don't understand nothing.”

“If we finish the game 2-0, I say here the same,” Gil said. “It's not football, it's impossible to play like this. Congratulations to Real Salt Lake because they are amazing players, you know. But I don't understand why we play today like we play. We lose one game because we lose a game, for us, for them, for the soccer, for the fans, for everything.”

Usually, when a losing captain has an axe to grind following a defeat, there's a tendency to put at least some of the bad feeling down to disappointment over the result.

However, in this instance, footage from the venue proves Gil has strong grounds for his protest.

During the first half, in particular, the pitch was covered in a thick blanket of snow, making it tough to even see the markings on the pitch.

To complicate matters further, Real Salt Lake took to the field in an all-white strip - the most unfortunate colour choice imaginable given the weather!

Relentless snow and an icy wind made life even harder for the players, conditions that Revolution defender A.J. DeLaGarza called "the worst I've ever seen in my entire life".

Despite the clearly challenging environment, match officials still tacked on a hefty four minutes of added time to the first period - ironically during which New England took the lead.

The decision on whether or not to proceed with the match against the backdrop of a blizzard must have been a borderline one for match officials because these were crazy scenes.

Gil's Revolution side are next in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Mexico City to face Liga MX’s Pumas UNAM in the CONCACAF Champions League - where they will be relieved to hear that it hasn't snowed since 1967!
