Sam Kerr recreated the iconic Brandi Chastain celebration after scoring a last-minute winner for Chelsea against Aston Villa. The Blues had been frustrated for the majority of this afternoon’s match, with Aston Villa goalkeeper Hannah Hampton particularly impressing between the sticks. With the minutes ticking away, Kerr finally managed to break the deadlock to give her side a crucial three points in the Women’s Super League title race. She slotted the ball into the back of the net after finding herself on the receiving end of a long ball from Chelsea goalkeeper Zećira Mušović.Kerr then showed just how important the goal was to her team, taking off her shirt and whipping it round and round in the air as she celebrated. Her revelry had parallels to Brandi Chastain’s iconic celebration at the Women’s World Cup in 1999.

After scoring the winning penalty for the United States in the final, Chastain ripped off her shirt, waved it around her head and dropped to her knees.

An image of her celebration was described in The New York Times as the "most iconic photograph ever taken of a female athlete".

Kerr picked up a yellow card for taking off her shirt during the celebration but her goal could well help Chelsea retain their Women’s Super League title.

The Blues are still two points behind leaders Arsenal, but with a game in hand. They have seven matches left to play.

It has been a tumultuous time for Chelsea, who were rocked last week after the UK Government decided to freeze the assets of club owner Roman Abramovich. This came in the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces.

Abramovich is now unable to sell Chelsea, with the club placed under special financial measures preventing them from selling tickets or merchandise, buying or selling players, or offering new contracts.

This is also expected to impact the women’s team, with Jonna Andersson, Maren Mjelde, Ji So-yun, and Drew Spence all at risk of becoming free agents this summer.
