Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum would be a "great signing" for Aston Villa, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 31-year-old only joined Paris Saint-Germain last summer but is now being linked with a move to Villa amid a difficult season in Ligue 1.

What is the latest news involving Wijnaldum?

According to SPORT (via MailOnline), Villa are one side who are interested in signing Wijnaldum in a potential £21m deal.

The Dutchman was recently booed off by PSG supporters in the club's 3-0 win over Bordeaux and has spoken about not being happy at the Parc des Princes in the past, so it is clear to see things have not gone to plan for him.

"I can't say I'm completely happy because the situation is not what I wanted," Wijnaldum told Dutch outlet NOS earlier this season. "But that's football and I'll have to learn to deal with that. I'm a fighter. I have to stay positive and work hard to turn it around."

In total, Wijnaldum has made 30 appearances in all competitions for PSG this term, so that is at least one positive for the 85-cap Netherlands international.

What has Jones said about Wijnaldum to Villa?

Jones thinks Villa could give Wijnaldum a home and that he would be a great acquisition for them.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "It'd be a great signing. You're trying to give a home to somebody who isn't feeling that great about themselves right now."

What would Wijnaldum bring to Villa?

One thing that makes Wijnaldum an appealing target for Villa is his experience in the Premier League.

Across his spells at Liverpool and Newcastle United, Wijnaldum has made over 200 top-flight appearances, scoring 27 goals and providing 16 assists in the process.

He is also a player that brings a lot of energy to the middle of the park. Speaking about his compatriot a couple of years ago, former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel told the Reds' official club website: "I have no words for Gini's performances and quality.

"He's an incredible person. His energy is incredible, he has lungs for days. You can tell when he has the confidence, he's really unbeatable and very hard to play against."

Ultimately, things have not quite worked out for Wijnaldum in France, but he is still a quality player. If Steven Gerrard can bring him to Villa Park this summer, then he could be a very good signing for the Midlands club.
