Dustin Poirier has admitted that he is 'more likely' to fight Nate Diaz than Colby Covington in his next fight.

Covington, 33, was last seen in action last month at UFC 272 in Las Vegas, where he scored a unanimous decision victory over Jorge Masvidal.

The American eased to victory and won virtually every round. He was dropped in the fourth round, but controlled most of the action on the ground using his slick grappling and wrestling.

After the fight, Covington called out former UFC interim lightweight champion, Poirier.

The Diamond however doesn't seem to have any interest in fighting his former teammate.

Poirier told ESPN: "I mean, it’s cute.

"Yeah, it's all good you know, it is what it is.

"People want big fights. That’s a big fight. He wants a big fight. Obviously, he’s not in line for the title fight.

"He lost twice to the champ, so he probably needs a few more wins, but I would think if you want to get back to that strap, you’ve got to fight welterweight contenders.

"I don’t know what I’m doing, if I’m going to welterweight, if I’m staying at 155, we’ll see. It is what it is."

Diaz hasn't fought since his June 2021 loss to Leon Edwards and has been heavily linked to a fight with Poirier since the latter lost to Charles Oliveira in December.

“Nate Diaz is a fight I want,” Poirier added.

"I’ve been watching him and his brother forever so it’s exciting for me.

"The matchup would be fun for the fans. That’s more likely than the Colby fight. This summer, I think it’s going to happen.”

Poirier also refused to rule out staying at lightweight as he insists he can still make the weight comfortably despite previously teasing a move up to welterweight.

“I can still make 155, it’s just how I want to spend my days,” he explained.

“Like, if I want to be in camp dieting hardcore, or maybe living a little bit more of a fun camp where I can eat and feel like I can heal up and just have fun training, not hating the diet.

“We’ll see. I’m not making any huge decisions right now. Just kind of playing the options I have.”
