Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard ‘undoubtedly has the ability’ to talk Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum into joining his revolution, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 31-year-old departed Liverpool for the French giants over the summer on a free transfer but has struggled to find his best form, resulting in him being linked with a move away.

What is the latest news involving Wijnaldum?

According to Spanish outlet Sport (via MailOnline), Villa are keen to snap up Wijnaldum, who previously admitted that he is ‘not completely happy’ with his situation at the Parc des Princes.

The report states that PSG have slapped a £21 million price tag on the 85-cap Netherlands international and that reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are believed to be leading the race for his signature.

Although Wijnaldum’s current contract doesn’t expire until June 2024, Mauricio Pochettino’s charges are said to be willing to let him depart after failing to establish himself in the capital club’s engine room.

In total, the technically gifted talent has made 30 appearances for PSG to date, but only 15 of those have come as starts in Ligue 1, and he was left on the bench for both legs of their Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid.

Wijnaldum - who earns a reported £165,000-per-week - may be keen to secure regular game time next season, therefore, and Villa Park could be the ideal destination for exactly that.

What has Jones said about Wijnaldum?

Gerrard took over the reins at Villa back in November and has already shown his pulling power, bringing in ex-teammate Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona during the winter window.

And Jones believes the retired Liverpool legend can pull off another significant coup by attracting Wijnaldum to the Midlands outfit.

He told GiveMeSport: “The PSG move hasn't really worked out for him on a personal level. And I think Steven Gerrard undoubtedly has the ability to talk him around this move.”

Would Wijnaldum be a good signing?

Throughout spells at both Newcastle United and Liverpool, Wijnaldum showcased his ability as a top-class Premier League player, registering 27 goals and 16 assists in 217 top-flight outings.

He also claimed the 2019/20 title with the Reds and played a pivotal part as they secured a Champions League crown the season before.

Adding someone with Wijnaldum’s experience and quality to their midfielder could be hugely beneficial to Villa, and youngsters such as Jacob Ramsey could learn a lot from his presence on the training ground.
