Ezri Konsa leaving Aston Villa this summer would not come as a surprise to former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The 24-year-old has been a regular in Villa's back four over the past three seasons, but he could still move on in the next transfer window.

What's the latest news involving Konsa?

Konsa has featured in 22 Premier League matches this term, playing alongside England international Tyrone Mings for much of the campaign.

However, it was reported last month that the Midlands club are ready to listen to offers for Konsa at the end of the season as Steven Gerrard is planning to make significant changes to his playing staff.

The Villa boss has also made the decision in recent weeks to leave Konsa out of his starting XI. The defender has only played once in Villa's last six matches, with Gerrard preferring Calum Chambers instead.

What has Palmer said about Konsa?

Villa had an interesting January transfer window as they brought in Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Chambers, while also offloading Matt Targett and Anwar El Ghazi.

Palmer has suggested that Gerrard allowing Targett to leave highlights how he is willing to make big calls in order to try to take his team to the next level. He now thinks Konsa could follow Targett out the exit door.

When asked about Gerrard potentially selling Konsa, the pundit told GIVEMESPORT: “It wouldn’t be a shock because you’ve seen what he did with the left full-back who went to Newcastle, Targett. He’s been consistently very, very good for Aston Villa, but Steven Gerrard has his ideas of how he wants to play the game of football, and what he wants his players to do.”

Should Villa be looking to sell Konsa?

The £22.5m-rated centre-back does appear to have dropped down the pecking order in recent weeks, and it seems he is not central to Gerrard's plans moving forward.

However, it could be a risky move on Villa's part to let him leave at this stage of his career.

At 24, he is likely to be coming into his peak shortly, and he has rarely let the team down over the past few years, proving that he is good enough to flourish at the highest level.

If Villa want to be competing for a European spot next season, they will need strength in depth across the pitch, and it will be hard to find someone to replace Konsa who brings the same qualities but is happy to not be a guaranteed starter.

Villa need to seriously consider whether this would be the right move as Konsa has plenty to offer, and is only likely to get better in the coming years.
