Lewis Hamilton says that he is ready to fight for a record-breaking 8th world title this season in Formula 1, describing the thought of the feat as 'mind-blowing.'

The Mercedes ace is back for his 15th year in the sport and is looking to eclipse Michael Schumacher's tally of seven world titles, with the two currently sharing the record for most Drivers' crowns.

Certainly, it would be some achievement if Lewis could do it in 2022 but also a fine way to respond from the adversity of 2021 where he saw what looked set to be the championship snatched away from him on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton is looking forward now, though, and speaking at the 2020 Expo event in Dubai, the Briton said it would be mind-blowing if he could set the benchmark for titles at 8 this coming campaign:

“I’ve come back to fight for that eighth (title), that’s what I’m here for.

“Doing something that no one else has done, of course would be mind-blowing.

“I still love what I do. I still am so challenged. I didn’t think at this age I would feel so sharp and so energised.

“I’m still getting up for my morning runs, still fitting those workouts in, still putting the time in, more than the youngsters do.”

The youngsters, of course, will be looking to take the fight to Hamilton with Max Verstappen chief among them after he took the championship back in December, following on from a year-long duel between the two drivers.

George Russell will want to have his say on the championship this year in the other Mercedes, though, whilst the likes of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz may fancy their chances with the Ferrari looking very strong indeed across testing in both Barcelona and then Bahrain.

Certainly, another exciting campaign could be instore and Hamilton will be aiming to make it his most impressive yet by coming out on top when all is said and done in November at the Yas Marina circuit.
