Maguire accidentally headbutts Ronaldo

One United corner saw Maguire trying to hold off a couple of Atleti players in order to create a yard of space for Ronaldo.

But Cristiano was left holding his teeth in pain when Maguire accidentally but inexplicably headbutted him.

Watch the bizarre footage here:

It also appears that Maguire may have attempted to hit himself with Reinildo Mandava’s hand in a desperate attempt to earn his team a penalty.

If any incident summed up United’s second half against Diego Simeone’s side, it’s surely this one.

Ronaldo attempted to head the ball moments later but was then seen holding his mouth again when it went out of play.

The legendary Portuguese forward had clearly suffered a hefty whack from the back of Maguire’s head.

United struggled to break down Atletico

Despite requiring a goal to get themselves back into the tie, United only mustered one shot on target during the second half.

Atletico’s experienced and streetwise players contained their opponents brilliantly and deservedly sealed their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

What next for Manchester United?

In terms of where United go from here, it’s patently clear that appointing the right permanent manager ahead of the 2022-23 season is of paramount importance.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag, who have also been knocked out of the Champions League within the past week with Paris Saint-Germain and Ajax respectively, remain the frontrunners for the job.

Ralf Rangnick, meanwhile, is expected to take up a consultancy role at Old Trafford when his spell as the club’s interim manager comes to an end.
