Man Utd next manager: Odds show Thomas Tuchel is third favourite

Manchester United will be trophyless this season after losing to Atletico Madrid in the Champions Laeague. But who will be their next manager?

It's another trophyless season for Manchester United.

The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League to Atletico Madrid after a 1-0 second leg defeat at Old Trafford.

In the Premier League, the best the club can hope for is a fourth-place finish. They're currently behind Arsenal, who occupy that spot, having played three more matches.

In the FA Cup, they lost at home to Middlesbrough on penalties.

Meanwhile, in the Carabao Cup, they were knocked out at home to West Ham.

That all means that it'll be five seasons without a trophy for Man Utd. That's simply not good enough for the most successful side in English football history.

Quite where United go next is unknown.

Interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, has attempted to steady the ship after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking but has been unable to.

It's unlikely he will be in charge at the start of next season but will, instead, turn to a consultancy role. That will include helping to appoint Man Utd's next permanent manager?

But with just months until the end of the season, we're still no clearer to finding out exactly who that will be.

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have been constantly mentioned but, last week, Jamie Carragher threw another name into the mix - Thomas Tuchel.

With all the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea right now, Carragher insisted United should go and bring the German to Old Trafford.

Is that realistic?

Well, according to odds from Sky Bet, Tuchel is actually now the third favourite.

Ajax boss Ten Hag leads the way at odds of 2/1. Incidentally, Ten Hag's Dutch side also crashed out of the Champions League after a 1-0 home defeat to Benfica on Tuesday.

Pochettino is the second favourite at odds of 3/1. Of course, his PSG side exited the competition last week.

Tuchel is now the third favourite, with Sky Bet rating him as a 5/1 shot.

Brendan Rodgers comes next (8/1), while Antonio Conte rounds off the top five.

Rangnick himself actually comes next, while Graham Potter (18/1), Zinedine Zidane (18/1), Carlo Ancelotti (20/1) and Diego Simeone (20/1) round off the 10 favourites to be Man Utd's next manager.

Who should United appoint?

Well, speaking after defeat to Atleti, Paul Scholes insists it should be someone who 'strikes fear' into the players.

“I keep saying it, and I know there is talk about people behind the scenes, but until we get a proper coach, a top-class elite coach from another football team which wins trophies and strikes fear into players (Man Utd will not get back to the highest level)," Scholes said on BT Sport.
