Ashley Young's versatility makes him a valuable player to Aston Villa, according to pundit Carlton Palmer.

The 39-cap international is out of contract at Villa Park in the summer, but Palmer has suggested that the Premier League outfit should prioritise keeping him at the club.

How has Young fared on his return to Villa?

Young rejoined Villa last summer from Inter Milan, after leaving the club ten years earlier to move to Manchester United.

He has not been an ever-present in the starting line-up this season but he has still made 18 top-flight appearances for the Villans.

During the course of the campaign, he has covered both full-back positions, played on either wing, and even moved into central midfield at times.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard is delighted with Young's contribution, and has labelled him a "manager's dream", while also making it clear that he wants the 36-year-old to stay beyond this summer.

What has Palmer said about Young?

Palmer feels Young's ability to play in multiple positions for Villa is very useful for the side, and he has drawn comparisons between the former Premier League winner and Liverpool's James Milner.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about Young's future, Palmer said: “Of course you want to keep somebody like Ashley around. He can play numerous positions on the football pitch, and we’ve seen that with Milner. It’s a great asset to have, and they actually become very important players at the football club.”

Is it a smart move for Villa to look to keep hold of Young?

It appears to make perfect sense.

Having played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, Young's experience could be crucial moving forward, and he is a player that the youngsters in the squad can learn plenty from.

Gerrard has also commented on his positive influence in the dressing room, and Villa need good characters if they are going to keep pushing on next season.

Young will turn 37 in July, so Villa can hardly rely on him to play every week if they do opt to extend his contract.

However, if he can make himself available for the majority of their games, like he has done this term, then he could be a solid option for Gerrard in 2022/23.
