Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah could be at the centre of 'the transfer saga of the summer' if he fails to sign a new contract at Anfield in the coming months, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Salah's £200,000-per-week deal is due to expire in the summer of 2023 and he has not come to an agreement over fresh terms despite the Reds being desperate to keep the attacker on their books.

What's the latest news involving Salah?

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told the Here We Go Podcast, via HITC, that Liverpool do not want to alter their current wage structure and, as a result, the Merseyside giants are not optimistic over their chances of persuading Salah to extend his stay at Anfield.

Romano has also suggested Salah is not desperate to move onto pastures new in the summer, meaning there is a distinct possibility that Liverpool could see one of their prised assets depart on a free transfer at the end of next season.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed the 80-cap Egypt international will have the final decision over his future as his current employers have done everything they can to persuade him to put pen-to-paper.

However, it would appear Salah's agent does not agree with Klopp as Ramy Abbas Issa appeared to mock the German by heading onto social media to post seven laughing emojis after the claim.

Seeing Salah depart would come as a huge blow to Liverpool as the attacker has racked up 153 goals and won five trophies on Merseyside.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Salah?

O'Rourke is certain that plenty of big-hitting clubs will be keeping a close eye on Salah's situation and ready to pounce if he does not reach an agreement over fresh terms.

The journalist feels the 29-year-old, who was once valued at £135million by Transfermarkt, could spark a bidding war when the window reopens in the summer.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think this is probably heading towards being the transfer saga of the summer and maybe beyond that.

"That's where things are going because it seems Mo Salah is no closer to agreeing a new contract with Liverpool."

Who could Salah join if he leaves Liverpool?

According to Spanish sources, Barcelona head coach Xavi has earmarked Salah as a potential arrival if he fails to prise Erling Haaland away from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

The report suggests the Catalan side feel Salah's precarious contract situation means they could seal a deal for as little as £50million in the summer despite Transfermarkt valuing him at £90million.

Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been tracking proceedings on Merseyside since it became clear Salah was seeking in the region of £500,000-per-week in order to sign a new contract with Liverpool.
