UFC welterweight Colby Covington has lashed out at Jorge Masvidal after the latter accused Covington of cheating at UFC 272.

In the main event of UFC 272 earlier this month, Colby Covington registered a comfortable unanimous decision win over bitter rival Jorge Masvidal. While he did have to overcome some late adversity, ‘Chaos’ still managed to impress with some improved ground and pound alongside his consistently strong wrestling.

In the first round, Masvidal suffered an eye poke at the hands of Covington that he was notably struggling with during the post-fight press conference. In the days following, ‘Gamebred’ proceeded to accuse Covington of cheating - although he did maintain that his foe got the better of him in their grappling exchanges.

During an appearance on Submission Radio, Covington didn’t mince his words when responding to the BMF champion.

“I was supposed to be in critical condition - this is the same guy that said I’m gonna leave Colby in critical condition on Monday, he might not make it. The only thing in critical condition is Jorge Masvidal’s career.

“I don’t buy anything that guy says - he’s full of s***, he’s full of lies, people believe what I say now because I speak truth and I speak honestly.”

“No one takes that guy seriously anymore. If you take him seriously, you’re probably as uneducated as he is.”

The next step for Colby Covington

The self-proclaimed people’s champion made it clear after UFC 272 that he wants to add another big scalp to his list - Dustin Poirier. The Louisiana native is coming off the back of a submission defeat to Charles Oliveira and while he did say he isn’t overly interested in battling Covington in the cage, the financial reward may be too strong to turn down for ‘The Diamond’.

Colby has also hinted at a move up to middleweight but if there’s a path back to Kamaru Usman, you can bet he’ll try and get that trilogy fight.

Eternal MMA 64 takes place early Saturday morning. The prelims will be streamed live on GiveMeSport’s official Facebook page, while the main card will be broadcast live on UFC Fight Pass.
