Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi possesses similar attributes to John Terry, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

Guehi was only handed his Premier League debut back in August but he has already caught the eye in his maiden top-flight campaign.

How has Guehi fared this season?

The 21-year-old has started all but one of Palace's league games this term, and has helped his side keep eight clean sheets under Patrick Vieira.

He has even been given the captain's armband on multiple occasions in recent weeks, highlighting how Vieira has plenty of faith in the youngster.

He is not the only one as Gareth Southgate has rewarded him by picking him in his latest England squad ahead of more experienced players such as Eric Dier and Fikayo Tomori.

Guehi could be in line to make his Three Lions debut later this month when England take on Switzerland and Ivory Coast in friendlies at Wembley.

What has Barclay said about Guehi?

Some may be shocked by Guehi's call-up, but Barclay has suggested that it is fully warranted, and has compared the centre-back to Terry, who won 78 international caps during his glittering career.

Reflecting on Guehi's season, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s only been improving. He’s forming a good relationship with Joachim Andersen. He’s never been blessed with rapid pace, but his understanding of the game has really helped him on that front.

“I’m not surprised that John Terry is his idol. When you consider the similarities, John Terry didn’t have a lot of pace but his reading of the game nullified that problem.”

Can Guehi follow in Terry's footsteps?

Guehi has a huge task on his hands if he wants to replicate Terry's success as the ex-Chelsea captain won five league titles and a Champions League at Stamford Bridge, while also being a mainstay in England's defence for the best part of a decade.

Of course, Guehi could have become a Chelsea hero himself, but the Blues allowed him to move to Selhurst Park last summer. They may now be regretting that decision.

It is still far too early to heap pressure on Guehi, but he appears to be going from strength to strength, and he has so much room for improvement given how young he is.

If he keeps playing at his current level, it won't be long before some of the biggest clubs in the country come calling, and then he may well be able to compete for major trophies, just like Terry did at Chelsea.
