Tottenham Hotspur’s apparent interest in Barcelona forward Memphis Depay is an ‘interesting transfer link’, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Depay has reportedly attracted the interest of Spurs in recent weeks after falling down the pecking order under new Barca manager Xavi, opening the door to a potentially imminent exit.

What is the latest news involving Depay?

According to Spanish reporter Gerard Romero (as quoted by BarcaUniversal), Tottenham have ‘already made an offer’ for Depay as they look to bolster their attacking options.

The 75-cap Netherlands international arrived at Camp Nou last summer on a free transfer form Lyon, reuniting with his former national team boss Ronald Koeman.

And Depay got his Barca career off to a fast start, registering eight goals and two assists in his opening 15 La Liga games for the Catalan giants.

However, the departure of Koeman combined with a hamstring and Achilles injury has seen the 28-year-old fail to start a league game since 4 December.

In Depay’s absence, January signings Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the returning Ousmane Dembele have made the attacking positions their own, guiding the Blaugrana to third place in the top-flight table and to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Xavi, therefore, may deem the technically gifted talent surplus to requirements as he plots the next step in his rebuild, allowing Tottenham to swoop in and take advantage.

What has O’Rourke said about Depay?

O’Rourke has stated how the speculation over Depay’s future is intriguing after his time at Barca hasn’t quite gone as planned so far.

He told GiveMeSport: “Yeah, it's an interesting transfer link this one. Depay obviously worked hard to secure that move to Barcelona on a free transfer, but since the change of manager, with Xavi taking over from Ronald Koeman, he's dropped down the pecking order at Camp Nou.

"So, Depay, I think he'd be a good signing for somebody like Spurs. He's a versatile forward; he has done well at club level and at international level as well. So, if Spurs are able to sign somebody of the calibre of Memphis Depay, who it seems doesn't figure in Barcelona’s plans, I think it could be a good signing.”

Do Spurs need Depay?

Star striker Harry Kane attempted to force his way out of his boyhood club last summer, and serious doubts remain over his long-term future.

Meanwhile, fellow attacker Steven Bergwijn has been heavily linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after struggling for game time under Antonio Conte.

Spurs have also struggled in front of goal for large portions of the current campaign, with their tally of 47 Premier League strikes the second-lowest tally amongst the top seven clubs.

Therefore, Depay’s arrival would surely be warmly welcomed by Conte and the club’s supporters as Spurs look to continue their progression on the pitch.
