Messi, Ronaldo, Raul: 12 players to top UCL scoring more than once

Robert Lewandowski is the top scorer in the Champions League this season.

After his hat-trick in the 7-1 mauling of Red Bull Salzburg that booked Bayern Munich's place in the quarter-finals, the Polish striker has 12 goals to his name.

It's now going to take something special from either Mohamed Salah or Karim Benzema to knock him off of top spot.

If Lewandowski finishes as the Champions League's leading scorer in 2021/22, he'll join an exclusive club of players to achieve the feat twice.

Bayern's talisman netted an astonishing 15 goals in the 2019/20 edition of the competition, which the German outfit won by beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

So who're the other players who've won the Golden Boot in either the European Cup or Champions League on multiple occasions?

Let's take a look...

Torbjörn Nilsson - 2

The Swedish striker was the European Cup's top scorer in two consecutive seasons between 1984 and 1986 at IFK Göteborg. His best campaign was 1984/85, where he found the back of the net seven times.

Alfredo di Stefano - 2

A bona fide Real Madrid legend. Di Stefano led the way for goals in 1957/58 and 1961/62, the Argentine icon scoring a whopping 10 times in the former. He also won five (yes, FIVE) European Cups during his memorable spell at Los Blancos.

Romario - 2

Both of Romario's Golden Boot winning seasons came at PSV Eindhoven. The Brazilian maestro scored seven times for the Dutch outfit in both 1989/90 and 1992/93, before joining Johan Cruyff's Barcelona 'Dream Team'.

Raul Gonzalez - 2

Raul really was unplayable in his prime at Real Madrid. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, defenders just couldn't lay a glove on him and he finished as the Champions League's top scorer in the 1999/00 and 2000/01 editions of the competition.

Andriy Shevchenko - 2

A Ballon d'Or winner and one of the greatest strikers in history. Shevchenko seemed to always come alive in the Champions League during his AC Milan days. The Ukrainian's first European Golden Boot actually came in 1998/99 with Dynamo Kyiv and he then repeated the feat at Milan in 2005/06.

Ferenc Puskas - 3

Yet another Real Madrid legend. Puskas won the European Cup three times with the Spanish club and led the way for goals in 1959/60, 1961/62 and 1963/64. The biggest club competition in world football really was the Hungarian's personal playground.

Jean-Pierre Papin - 3

Papin was a magnificent striker in his heyday with Marseille. He scored 175 goals in 266 games for the French club and his best European season at the club came in 1991/92, when he rippled the back of the net seven times.

Eusebio - 3

The all-time greats just keep on coming, don't they? In the 1960s at Benfica, Eusebio was terrifyingly good in front of goal. He finished as the European Cup's top goal-getter in 1964/65, 1965/66 and 1967/68. What an incredible player.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - 3

People in the present day forget just how good Van Nistelrooy was. He was an absolute goal machine at Manchester United and often saved his best for the Champions League. The Dutchman reached double figures in the 2001/02 and 2002/03 campaigns, before finishing as the competition's top scorer once again in 2004/05.

Gerd Muller - 4

The word 'prolific' doesn't do Muller justice to be honest. The German hero scored goals at a frightening rate during his time at Bayern Munich. Muller was the top scorer in the European Cup in three consecutive seasons from 1972 to 1975 and 'Der Bomber' then decided to do it again in 1976/77.

Lionel Messi - 6

The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has 125 Champions League goals to his name and has lifted the trophy four times. On top of that, he finished as top scorer in six campaigns with Barcelona, reaching double figures in as many as four of them. Not bad, eh?

Cristiano Ronaldo - 7

But if you think Messi's return is good, Ronaldo's is on a whole different level. The man aptly nicknamed 'Mr Champions League' has scored a record 140 goals in the competition and has won seven Golden Boots. His first came in 2007/08 at Manchester United and the last was in 2017/18 at Real Madrid. Ronaldo also holds the record for the most goals scored in a single campaign when he hit 17 in 2013/14.
