Gary Lineker is not letting it go after the FIA confirmed ‘human error’ helped Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton in the controversial finish to last year’s Formula 1 season. The governing body have released their report into the dramatic events that saw Verstappen snatch the title from Hamilton. It’s been acknowledged that race director Michael Masi didn’t follow F1 regulations with his handling of the safety car.Masi “called the safety car back into the pit lane without it having completely an additional lap as required by the Formula 1 Sporting Regulations (Article 48.12),” the report says.

The report also highlights the fact that only five cars were able to un-lap themselves before Masi allowed one final racing lap between the leaders.

"The process of identifying lapped cars has up until now been a manual one and human error led to the fact that not all cars were allowed to un-lap themselves,” the FIA say.

Gary Lineker reacts on Twitter

Lineker made his feelings about the controversy clear at the annual BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony last December.

The Match of the Day host quipped: “That was the most incredible end to a season that had absolutely everything, possibly apart from a fair final lap.”

And in the wake of the FIA’s report, Lineker has made it clear that he’s still not over it.

“Most robberies are committed by humans,” he tweeted.

Lineker isn’t alone in his feelings.

But the FIA say Masi acted in “good faith” and the results of the race remain valid.

The “report continued: “The report finds that the race director was acting in good faith and to the best of his knowledge given the difficult circumstances, particularly acknowledging the significant time constraints for decisions to be made and the immense pressure being applied by the teams.

"The results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the FIA Formula One World Championship are valid, final and cannot now be changed."
