It was announced on Thursday that former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has been 'excluded' from the Fenerbahce squad. In a statement announcing the suspension of both Ozil and former Watford loanee Ozan Tufan, the Turkish club declined to give a reason behind their decision.

According to a report from Football.London, though, the 33-year-old is believed to have been disciplined as a result of a bust-up with the Turkish Süper Lig side's interim manager, Ismail Kartal.

Already understood to be frustrated at his lack of playing time recently, Ozil was said to have been furious over being substituted at half-time during Fenerbahce's win over Konyaspor last Sunday and vented at Kartal afterwards, leading to his 'exclusion' from the squad.

The suspension marks the latest in a long line of clashes that Ozil has had with managers throughout his controversial career.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta clearly wasn't impressed with Ozil during the final months of the playmaker's time at the Emirates, dropping him from both the Gunners' Premier League and Europa League squads.

However, as much of a slight as that must have been to Ozil, it wasn't as rough as the treatment he received at Real Madrid under the rule of Jose Mourinho.

When the outspoken Portuguese boss decided to substitute Ozil at half-time of a 2012 La Liga clash with Deportivo, Mourinho left his player in absolutely no doubt as to how he felt about his performance.

“‘Do you think that giving two good passes is enough? Do you think that you are so good that you only need to complete 50 per cent of your passes?’,” ranted Jose, per Ozil's 2017 autobiography (via Marca).

“He stopped and looked at me with his dark brown eyes. I leaned back. It was like the look of two boxers before the first round. I hated him even though I actually adored him,” admitted Ozil.

“‘I want you to play as you know, to go for the ball like a man, do you know how to go for the ball when we lose it?’,” Mourinho asked.

Given that Real were leading 3-1 at the time, Ozil was understandably upset at being given both barrels by Jose and saltily replied: “If you are so great then why don’t you play. There you go, do that.”

As you can probably guess, Mourinho then exploded.

“‘Are you giving up?’,” he asked.

”’You’re a coward. What do you want? Do you want a nice hot shower, wash your hair and be alone?

“Or would you prefer to show your teammates, the fans and me what you can do? Remember, I don’t need you.’”

Having heard enough from Mourinho, Ozil stormed off, throwing his jersey to the floor as he did so.

In a heartwarming show of support, Ozil's colleague Sergio Ramos actually picked his shirt up from the ground and wore it under his own during the second-half - choosing to support his teammate over his manager.

Ozil's number 10 shirt was clear visible on camera under Ramos' number four jersey for the rest of the game - as you can see in the images below.

Ramos' gesture didn't go down well with Mourinho. Per a report from Marca at the time, the Spaniard was dropped for a Champions League clash with Manchester City as punishment. Fair play to him for sticking up for his teammate, though!

Ozil ultimately outlasted Mourinho at Real by a matter of a few months, eventually departing in September 2013. The midfielder looks likely to need a major shake-up in the dugout at Fenerbahce if he is to have any future at the club.
