Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster's return to the England fold has been described as "some turnaround" by journalist Tom Barclay.

Following a host of injuries in Gareth Southgate's squad, the 34-year-old received his first Three Lions call up for almost five years for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

What's the latest news involving Forster?

With Forster essentially a back up goalkeeper for the best part of four years, playing international football again probably wasn't even on his agenda.

He did speak publicly about wanting to play for his country again while on loan at Celtic in 2019-2020, but he's generally been understudy to Alex McCarthy since he returned to Southampton before the start of last season.

However, McCarthy's injury just before Christmas has allowed Forster to come back into the side and kept his place ever since.

And Forster has been rewarded with a return to the England squad, although his call up is down to Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone withdrawing with injury and illness.

Regardless, with Forster's last cap coming in a friendly against Australia ahead of Euro 2016, Barclay has praised the goalkeeper for returning to the setup.

What did Barclay say about Forster?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It's some turnaround. Injuries are huge in terms of giving people chances, and he would know that best from when he got a bad knee injury, which pretty much curtailed his England career."

Could Forster play against Switzerland or Ivory Coast?

While Southgate might be willing to give more players minutes in friendly matches, Forster is still most likely to be close to the bottom of the list in that sense.

Jordan Pickford is his number one goalkeeper, which means the Everton man is likely to start at least one of the two games.

If Southgate then opts to give Pickford a rest for Ivory Coast's visit to Wembley, then Nick Pope, who was named in his original squad, could then take up his place in the starting line up for a rare start.

Therefore, unless the Three Lions manager decides to change his goalkeeper mid-game, which has proved the case in the past, then Forster has essentially met up with the squad to make up the numbers and will be watching on from the bench.
