It’s certainly going to be strange not seeing Italy at the 2022 World Cup.
At Euro 2020, Roberto Mancini’s side looked like the best international team on the planet and most believed they would cruise through their qualifying group.
But Switzerland finished ahead of them and that meant Italy had to settle for a place in the play-offs, an outcome that has proven to have disastrous consequences.
In their semi-final encounter against North Macedonia on home soil, the Azzurri were condemned to a shock 1-0 defeat thanks to Aleksandar Trajkovski’s superb stoppage-time winner.
It really was a snatch and grab win by North Macedonia. Italy had 70% of the possession and over 30 shots on goal, but just couldn’t find a way past Stole Dimitrievski in goal.
Mancini’s side didn’t perform badly on the night truth be told, although there was one moment in which Chelsea midfielder Jorginho went full Sunday League.
During the second half, the former Napoli man slipped while trying to defend against Enis Bardhi in the middle of the park and then showed a turn of pace befitting of a snail in his attempt to try and stop the North Macedonia playmaker.

Okay, we know Jorginho isn’t the fastest player. After all, he’s got a pace rating of just 55 on FIFA 22.
However, surely an elite-level professional should have more acceleration than that seen above, right? Bardhi isn’t exactly the quickest footballer either, but he was made to look like Kylian Mbappe on a counterattack by Jorginho.

Speed is certainly one of Jorginho’s weaknesses, but we feel it’s only right to highlight his many strengths as well.
The 30-year-old is a top-quality passer of the ball, can dictate the tempo of matches at the very highest level and is usually lethal from the penalty spot.
He’s also pretty useful when it comes to the defensive side of the game for the most part. Well, until he has to chase someone…
