Luis Diaz’s stunning goal v Bolivia ended Colombia’s 196-day goal drought

Luis Diaz is proving to be one of the most exciting newcomers to the Premier League this season.

Since joining from Porto in January, the £37 million forward has given Liverpool fans a lot to cheer about, netting two goals in 12 matches for his club.

But he continued his fine vein of form on Thursday night for his country, opening the scoring for Colombia during their World Cup qualifying match against Bolivia.

The 25-year-old broke the scoring inside 40 minutes and was followed up by two second-half goals from Miguel Borja and Porto midfielder Mateus Uribe, giving The Tricolours a 3-0 win and keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup alive.

While the three-goal triumph will be a great aid to Colombia’s goal difference, they are unlikely to gain automatic entry for the World Cup, sitting five points off the qualifying places with one match left to play.

But a big win against Venezuela on Tuesday could see them climb to fifth place in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification table, which would put them through to an intercontinental playoff match and take an indirect route to year’s tournament in Qatar.

And with Diaz up top, we’re not writing the Colombians off just yet, especially considering his effort last night, curling in a beauty of a strike that broke a 196-day goal drought for the South American side.

Receiving a sublime cross-field pass from Juan Cuadrado, the former Porto winger shows his elite command of the football, expertly controlling the long pass with a deft touch.

With the ball at his feet, he cuts inside, leaving one defender for dead, before sweeping his right foot across the ball, whipping it around the goalkeeper and into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Liverpool really do have some player on their hands.

The build-up to the goal is simply sublime and his ability to cut inside and execute that shot around the ‘keeper shows just how good he is.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans were enamoured by the strike on Twitter, with many in disbelief at their new signings insane skills…

Considering his quality, there’s no doubt the Reds will be calling on him over the coming months to help them overturn Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.
