Erik ten Hag has a 'real good chance' of winning the race to be appointed as Manchester United's next manager, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Ralf Rangnick took over as the the Red Devils' interim boss last November, but he is due to move into a consultancy role at the end of the campaign.

What's the latest news involving ten Hag?

Ten Hag is understood to be in pole position to be named Manchester United's next manager after the club hierarchy undertook extensive background checks on each of their targets.

The Red Devils have reportedly held ‘positive’ talks with the current Ajax chief, with the Dutchman said to have impressed the key decision-makers behind-the-scenes with his vision and philosophy.

According to the Daily Mail, ten Hag was not the first candidate to hold formal discussions with Manchester United's new chief executive Richard Arnold and the Red Devils will need to make a decision quickly.

That is because the report suggests ten Hag is set to leave Ajax at the end of the season and has spoken to two other European clubs that play regularly in the Champions League, with one already making a firm offer which interests him.

Ten Hag has guided the Dutch giants to five trophies, including two Eredivisie titles, during his time in charge.

Over the course of his managerial career, the 52-year-old has sealed 277 victories in 429 fixtures.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about ten Hag?

O'Rourke believes the backing of Rangnick could be crucial as ten Hag looks to be named as his replacement in the Manchester United dugout.

The journalist feels the current interim boss will be playing a key role in deciding who will be at the helm by the time next season gets underway.

He reckons how ten Hag put across his vision, in front of the likes of Arnold, will determine whether he is offered the managerial reins.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "If ten Hag has interviewed well and he has got the backing of the likes of Ralf Rangnick, he's got a real good chance of landing that job."

Who else is in the running for the top job?

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United have compiled a four-man shortlist of potential long-term successors to Rangnick.

The report suggests Mauricio Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique have joined ten Hag in going head-to-head for the Old Trafford job.

Pochettino is currently in charge of Paris Saint-Germain, while Lopetegui and Enrique are at the helm of Sevilla and the Spain international side respectively.
