This Sunday, Manchester United Women will mark a milestone in their history when they walk out under the lights of the Theatre of Dreams.

The Red Devils will host their first ever match at Old Trafford in front of fans, a moment that has been a long time coming for both the players and supporters.

Last season, United hosted their first ever match at the main stadium, but with no fans in attendance and the fixture not broadcast, the occasion was bittersweet.

This time round, they will do it with all the bells and whistles. United will welcome Everton to Old Trafford as they continue their fight for Champions League qualification.

Reds Devils forward Alessia Russo sat down with GiveMeSport Women to talk about the magnitude of the event and how this is just the start of Man United Women's journey to the top.

"We’re all really excited, it’s a special occasion and I think it’s very much deserved of us to play here on such a wonderful pitch with all our friends and families and the fans in the stadium.

"But I think we’ll enjoy it a bit more after it’s done and we’ve put out a performance and hopefully earned three points."

As it stands, United are third in the WSL table but are being chased by neighbours Manchester City, who are behind only on goal difference.

For the Reds, one minor slip up could be disastrous and Russo stressed the team has acknowledged the importance of the five remaining league games.

Some upsets earlier this season blew the battle for Champions League football wide open, but United have bounced back and are very much in contention to secure a top three finish at the end of the campaign.

"We all believe in each other in the changing rooms and I think we have an identity and we have been working towards pushing the club to the places we want to take it," Russo said. "I think this season has been great but we have five huge games left that we need to take three points from.

"Obviously there’s been times this season where odds have been against us but we’ve come out with the results.

"I think that it stems back to the belief that we have in each other and I think we know how hard we work each week and when we see results, some people are surprised but as a team, we're not."

We know how far we want to take this club and the things we want to achieve with it. I think maybe at times people did write us off but I guess that’s a bit more motivation going into the games.

A win at Old Trafford will not only aid Man United's mission of a debut season in the Champions League, but it will be an occasion for the history books. All eyes are on the Red Devils and their moment in the spotlight this weekend.

The match will get underway on Sunday, March 27th at 12.30 GMT and will be available for UK viewers to watch live on Sky Sports Premier League.
