Happy retirement, Jermain Defoe. The former West Ham, Tottenham, Toronto, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Rangers striker announced earlier this week that he will be hanging up his goalscoring boots. He will do so as the ninth top goalscorer in Premier League history and regarded as one of the best finishers the league has ever seen. He’s also one of just five players to have scored FIVE goals in a single Premier League match. He achieved that back in November 2009 during Tottenham’s 9-1 victory over Wigan Athletic. However, those five goals ended up costing Defoe a cool £5,000.Let us explain how…At half-time at White Hart Lane, Spurs led 1-0.But in seven second-half minutes between the 51st and the 58th, Defoe bagged himself a hat-trick.And before the final whistle, Defoe helped himself to two more in a huge Spurs victory.

QUIZ: Can you name these England one-cap wonders?

How those five goals cost Defoe £5,000

However, years later, those five goals ended up costing Defoe £5,000.

How?

Well, in August 2020, a Wigan fan tweeted Defoe asked him for a donation to help the Latics who were struggling financially.

He wrote: “Ere @IAmJermainDefoe. Can I be cheeky as f**k and ask you to throw £5000 in here, 1 for each of those 5 goals you scored against Latics in the 9-1 defeat at Tottenham? I think it's the least you could do mate.

Thanks in advance. x”

The fan in question probably wasn’t expecting anything but, later that day, a £5,000 donation landed in the pot.

“Nice one @IAmJermainDefoe lad,” replied the original poster.

What a goalscorer. What a guy.
