England and penalty shootouts is usually never a good mix.

Apart from the Three Lions' famous triumph over Colombia in the last-16 of the 2018 World Cup, it's been nothing but heartbreak in the 21st century.

England were beaten on penalties by Portugal in the quarter-finals of both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, while Italy defeated them in that manner at Euro 2012.

And the Azzurri inflicted more penalty shootout misery on the nation in the final of Euro 2020.

Misses from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka sealed England's fate at Wembley Stadium last summer.

The selection of Saka as a penalty taker has been hotly debated ever since and there are some who believe that Jordan Pickford should have been picked instead.

It might sound a bit crazy, but the Everton goalkeeper can strike a ball better than most and he previously proved that he can deal with spot kick pressure on England duty.

In the 2019 UEFA Nations League third-place play-off, Pickford was handed the responsibility of taking the fifth penalty for his country against Switzerland after a dull 0-0 draw.

Knowing that if he missed it would hand the Swiss a chance to secure victory, the no-nonsense 'keeper stepped up and produced a penalty worthy of any world-class striker to have played the game.

If you think we're over exaggerating, take a look at Pickford's outstanding effort...

What. A. Penalty.

If England are involved in another shootout at the 2022 World Cup and Pickford is on the pitch, he simply has to be one of the first five takers.

Eric Dier scored England's sixth penalty when the 2019 shootout against Switzerland went to sudden-death and that paved the way for his teammate between the sticks to perform more heroics.

Pickford produced a brilliant save to deny Josip Drmic and win the play-off match for England.

Well played, Jordan.

After the game, Pickford was asked about his perfect penalty and the former Sunderland man freely admitted he was nervous.

"We practice them when there's a major competition or the Nations League, we practice them consistently," he said in a post-match interview.

"I picked my spot and I always seem to be able to get a goal, but I've never taken one in a real game so I was a bit nervous.

"I think we took (off) Harry Kane and some of the other lads who take penalties so I wasn't sure where I was in the pecking order, but it's what you practice for, you practice all the time to make sure you make it easier on the day."
