Italy were knocked out of the World Cup on Thursday evening as they were shocked by North Macedonia.

Gli Azzurri were heavy favourites going into their World Cup semi-final playoff match against North Macedonia in Palermo.

But the Euro 2020 winners were far from their best.

They failed to break North Macedonia down and they were punished in stoppage-time.

Aleksandar Trajkovski found space in the 92nd minute and unleashed a fierce effort from some 20 yards out which found the corner of the net.

There was no time for Italy to find an equaliser and thus they were eliminated from the competition.

They had 32 shots on goal but only five of them found the target.

They also had nine corners. And one those corners, taken by Lorenzo Insigne, summed Italy up in what was a disastrous evening for the nation.

Fan footage has emerged of Insigne attempting to take a short corner but passing straight to a North Macedonia player.

The North Macedonia player then boots the ball out of play while Insigne protests. Watch the moment below...

Italy fans gave Insigne a big build-up but they would have been extremely disappointed with what he produced.

Italy will have to watch the World Cup finals in Qatar at home.

They have now failed to qualify for the past two World Cup's.

That's simply not acceptable for a nation with so much history in the competition.

North Macedonia, meanwhile, will face off against Portugal on March 29 with the victor earning a place in Qatar.
