Paul Gascoigne slammed for tripping up young Rangers fan after inviting him on pitch

There were emotional scenes at Ibrox on Saturday as Paul Gascoigne scored during a Rangers legends game.

The legendary midfielder played three minutes in a legends match against a World XI that included the likes of Luis Figo, Kaka and Claude Makelele.

With Rangers 3-1 down, Gascoigne came off the bench and found the back of the net. Okay, he was very much encouraged to score but it was a fantastic moment that everyone inside the stadium enjoyed.

Beautiful.

While that was an incredible moment, another clip of Gascoigne during the match is also going viral. This one doesn’t quite shine Gazza in a positive light.

A clip has been shared that shows Gascoigne inviting a young fan with a football onto the pitch. But it seems the midfielder’s only intention was to play a prank as he soon tripped them up. The young supporter stayed down injured as a result before being helped up by another player.

Gascoigne, quite rightly, is being slammed by social media users as a result.

Okay, he didn’t mean too much harm and it was supposed to be a light-hearted joke but that’s no way to treat a young fan.

Gascoigne will be well aware that his actions were unnecessary and uncalled for and hopefully he made it up to the youngster afterwards.

Gascoigne spent three seasons at Rangers between 1995-1998, winning two league titles having signed from Lazio. His goal record of 30 goals in 74 league matches quickly established himself as a fan favourite north of the border before his switch to Middlesbrough.

He finished his career with short and unsuccessful spells at Everton, Burnley, Gansu Tianma and Boston United.

After the legends match on Saturday, Alex McLeish, who managed Rangers on the day admitted Gascoigne was a bit emotional following his goal.

“Gazza was absolutely loving it,” McLeish said.

“He is a little bit teary, but he is absolutely delighted with the reception he got from the fans.

“You can see how much he loves them.”

There’s no doubting Gascoigne’s legendary status but he shouldn’t be treating young fans like that.
