Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is expected to attract ‘interest’ in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 24-year-old was close to departing Spurs in January after struggling for regular game time in recent months and has been widely tipped to finally complete his exit when the market reopens for business.

What is the latest news involving Bergwijn?

Bergwijn arrived on English shores as an exciting young prospect following his £27 million switch from PSV Eindhoven back in January 2020.

The Netherlands international had won three Eredivisie titles with his boyhood club and made an instant impact with Tottenham, scoring a memorable goal on his debut in a 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

However, Bergwijn has been unable to kick on since then and has slowly slipped down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He started just 13 Premier League games throughout 2020/21, registering just one goal and seven assists in his 35 appearances across all competitions.

And opportunities have been even harder to come by for Bergwijn in the current campaign.

In total, the skilful forward has made 25 outings, but only four of those have come as starts in the top-flight and just one has come under the tutelage of new manager Antonio Conte.

What has O’Rourke said about Bergwijn?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed during the winter window that Ajax had seen a €35 million (£20.8m) bid rejected for Bergwijn after Conte decided he wanted to keep hold of the player.

But the versatile attacker hasn’t featured from the off since 23 January, opening the door to his possible departure, and O’Rourke believes he won’t be short of potential suitors.

In an exclusive interview with GiveMeSport: “I’d imagine there will be interest in somebody of Steven Bergwijn's calibre in the summer.”

Can Tottenham finish in the top four?

Conte replaced former boss Nuno Espirito Santo in November with the aim of guiding the capital club back into the Champions League for the first time since 2019/20.

At present, Spurs are sitting in fifth place, three points behind Arsenal, who also have a game in hand over their local rivals.

But three of Tottenham’s next four fixtures are against teams currently in the bottom half of the Premier League standings, and Conte will perhaps remain confident of guiding his side to Europe’s elite cup competition at the first time of asking.
