Football is ultimately a matter of opinions.

Is Cristiano Ronaldo better than Lionel Messi? Is Manchester United or Liverpool the biggest club in English football? Is Pele overrated? Is the Champions League or the World Cup the superior trophy?

If the answer to all of those questions were clearcut and beyond reproach, then discussions amongst fans in the terraces and around the pub table would be just about as bland as they come.

Opinions in football

The simple fact of the matter is that the wider conversations, narratives and debates that surround the beautiful game are a massive part of the fuel that keeps the whole machine chugging over.

Millions of fans from hundreds of territories will always tune in to see the biggest games, biggest players and biggest competitions to see who turns out to be the very best and who doesn't quite make it.

However, that's all well and good, but within that wider spectrum of debate that makes football such an interesting topic of conversation is what has come to be branded as the 'unpopular opinion'.

Yes, that's right, every supporter has at least one hot take on the sport that we love where they know for certain that it will run against what has become the prevailing opinion on the matter.

You think that Lother Matthaus is the GOAT? You think that Diego Maradona was average? You think that Turf Moor is the Premier League's best stadium? Yup, those would all be unpopular opinions.

Fans name their unpopular football opinions

So, it's an interesting scenario for football fans to all come together and take the brave step of revealing their unpopular opinions all in one go, right?

The answer, in case you're wondering, is a massive 'yes' because when Twitter user @StokeyyG2 asked fans to quote the footballing opinion that would get them in trouble, the response was simply huge.

With thousands of retweets and responses, the Twitter thread using a snap of Keanu Reeves surrounded by an array of guns to make its point was flooded with footballing opinions of, um, a questionable nature.

In fact, there were some opinions that were especially interesting and/or bonkers that we couldn't help putting them under the spotlight, so be sure to check out a few of the more eye-grabbing takes down below:

You can almost feel the footballing community reaching for their pitchforks and picket signs.

Power to you and your opinion

There's something beautiful about an unpopular opinion in the sense that a supporter is often so invested in it in sheer spite of the fact that it leaves thousands of onlookers with their heads in their hands.

Yes, you know it sounds mad and yes, you know that it's going to get backlash, but you're going to die on the hill that Steed Malbranque was the second coming of Ronaldo anyway. Good for you.

So, if you happen to believe that Benfica will win the Champions League, Qatar will make the World Cup semi-finals and that Jack Cork will be included in England's World Cup squad, then all the more power to you.

Only, you're wrong. Sorry, we couldn't resist.
