Back in 2015, Brendan Rodgers was incredibly excited about the talented players in Liverpool's academy setup.

“We have a lot of young players, and if you track their ages then it’s very exciting," he said at the time. "If they all stay together then it can be a real exciting time here at this club."

But just who was the Northern Irish manager referring to? Well, when the quote was made, The Mirror had a go at predicting the five players they believed were the focus of Rodgers' attention and would be Liverpool's 'next generation'.

So that begs the all-important question; what happened to that quintet of youngsters?

Well, we've taken a look and unfortunately for Liverpool, five success stories have not materialised in the years since...

Jerome Sinclair

Big things were expected of Sinclair, but his career has been a real disappointment up until now. The striker played just five games for Liverpool's first-team before being sold to Watford in 2016. Sinclair didn't make the grade their either and was instead loaned out to the likes of Birmingham, Sunderland, VVV-Venlo and CSKA Sofia, where goals were also hard to come by for him. The 25-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Watford in 2021.

Harry Wilson

It was obvious for quite a while that Wilson was never going to be a regular in Liverpool's starting XI. However, unlike Sinclair, the Welshman has excelled in England's lower leagues, particularly at Derby County and Bournemouth. Wilson joined Fulham on a permanent basis last summer and he's been absolutely brilliant for the club in 2021/22.

Sheyi Ojo

Ojo is the only member of the 'famous five' who's still a Liverpool player. The fleet-footed winger is currently on loan at Championship side Millwall, which is the ninth temporary spell at a club he's had since 2015. Ojo has played for the likes of Reims, Rangers, Wolves and Wigan in the past seven years or so.

Jordan Rossiter

Rossiter debuted for Liverpool in 2014 at age 17, but never got anything close to a consistent run in the team after. He joined Rangers in 2016, where injuries restricted him to just 16 appearances over the course of his four years on the club's books. Rossiter is now in League One with Fleetwood Town and has played 65 games for the club at the time of writing, which is certainly a step in the right direction.

Sergi Canos

Canos is perhaps the biggest success story of the five. The Spaniard is now a regular starter at Premier League level with Brentford after leaving Liverpool in 2015. Canos even scored in the Bees' 2021/22 season opener against Arsenal and is one of Thomas Frank's most important players.
