Newcastle duo Jamal Lewis and Jeff Hendrick are likely to be offloaded this summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Both players have fallen down the pecking order at St James' Park this term, and it seems that their days at the club may be numbered.

What has happened to Lewis and Hendrick this season?

Lewis featured in 24 top-flight matches in his debut season at Newcastle in 2020/21, but he has been limited to just five appearances during the current campaign.

The 24-year-old was left out of Eddie Howe's 25-man squad, which he named following the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Hendrick got even less minutes on the pitch in the first half of the season as he played just three times for the Magpies in the Premier League.

He opted to move to Championship side QPR on deadline day in January until the end of the season.

What has O'Rourke said about Lewis and Hendrick?

Newcastle are looking to kick on under their ambitious new owners, and it seems they could spend heavily in the next transfer window.

With this in mind, it looks like they will also have to sell some players to make room in their squad. Lewis and Hendrick could be prime candidates to be moved on.

When asked if Lewis and Hendrick, who have a combined valuation of £15.3m according to Transfermarkt, are set to leave, O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think it’s pretty inevitable that these players will be surplus to requirements at St James’ Park.”

Is there any way back for Lewis or Hendrick at Newcastle?

It's not looking particularly promising for the pair at the moment.

Since arriving in January, Matt Targett has made the left-back spot his own, while Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie can cover this position if needed. Therefore, Howe appears to have plenty of options for this position ahead of Lewis.

Looking at Newcastle's central midfield, Hendrick may have an even tougher task on his hands to force his way back into Howe's plans.

The Newcastle boss has often gone with a midfield trio of Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock and Joelinton in recent months, and new signing Bruno Guimaraes is starting to find his feet in England.

Furthermore, Sean Longstaff is another accomplished player in the middle of the park, and the side still have Isaac Hayden to return from injury.

Looking at the current makeup for the Newcastle squad, it is hard to see how Lewis or Hendrick could get back into the side next season.
