Anything other than promotion this season for Sheffield Wednesday will be seen as a failure for Darren Moore, according to former Owls midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Wednesday have got better as the season as progressed, and they remain in the thick of a top six race heading into the final seven games of their League One campaign.

What's the latest news involving Sheffield Wednesday?

After dropping points against both Accrington Stanley and Gillingham already this month, Moore's side bounced back by beating Cheltenham last weekend and took full advantage of Sunderland not being in action to climb back into the play offs.

The Owls sit sixth, and while they're just two points ahead of the Black Cats, only goal difference is keeping them below fifth place Oxford.

Wednesday have a favourable run of fixtures with only one of their seven remaining games against sides that are currently inside the top six, although Wycombe and Portsmouth are two of their more difficult encounters.

If Wednesday get enough points to gain their ticket to the lottery, Moore will have a one in four chance of getting the job done, but Palmer reckons that it's promotion or bust for the Owls manager.

What did Palmer say about Sheffield Wednesday?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He has the best squad in that league, he has the best squad of players in that league, they pay the highest wages in that league, so not getting promoted this season would be seen as a failure. I expected them to go up automatically."

Can Sheffield Wednesday still get promoted?

Before Wednesday consider winning the play offs, they need to book their place in the end of season campaign.

Their form has been generally good, so they should fancy their chances of doing exactly that, although eight of their 10 League One wins in 2022 have come at home, which doesn't bode well with four of their final seven fixtures on the road.

If Wednesday can get anywhere close to replicating their home form away from Hillsborough, then doing the first part of their promotion task should be straightforward.

After that, it's down to whoever turns up in the two semi-finals and the Wembley showcase.

At this moment, they're likely to face MK Dons or Plymouth, and while the duo are comfortably ahead of the Owls in the table, Moore's side have already beaten both this season and would back themselves to get the better of anyone with 50 per cent of the tie being played in front of a red-hot Hillsborough.
