Jon Jones, the greatest light heavyweight in UFC and perhaps MMA history, has confirmed that his time in the division has come to an end.

Ever since his UFC debut back in 2008, it’s been clear to see that Jon Jones is a special talent. The 34-year-old holds the record for being the youngest champion ever in the UFC, he successfully defended the belt 11 times, and he’s beaten a who’s who of greats at 205 pounds.

Daniel Cormier, Alexander Gustafsson, Mauricio Rua, Glover Teixeira, Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida are just a few of the names that ‘Bones’ has been able to knock off across the last decade and a half.

Alas, after announcing his intention to finally make the jump up to heavyweight in 2020, Jones had many wondering whether or not his days at LHW were officially over.

A few tweets here and there indicated that he may not be entirely done at the weight class and given that it’s been two years since his last bout, some wouldn’t have been surprised if he decided to head back down.

Now, though, Jones has taken to social media in order to reaffirm that he’s finished at light heavyweight - and why that’s the case.

“My candle for light heavyweight blew out, it showed in my last fight, instead of being discouraged by a bad performance, I’m stoked about this new season. New energy. My time at LWH was over, I see that more clear today than ever”

What happened at UFC 247?

In one of UFC’s final pay-per-view events before the pandemic hit, Jon Jones defended his UFC light heavyweight title against rising star Dominick Reyes.

While he may have been able to get the unanimous decision nod on the judges’ scorecards, the majority of pundits and fans watching were of the belief that Reyes did enough to edge past the GOAT.

This isn’t exactly evidence of Jon agreeing with that theory but it’s definitely interesting to note the tone he’s taking. After all, it’s not often you hear someone of his confidence suggesting that his candle “blew out”.

Moving forward, the question now turns to if and when we’re going to see his heavyweight debut.
